Big Decisions

By Brit on February 5th, 2010

For the last few weeks, I’ve been using one of Ginny’s old cameras (one given to her by a dear friend who passed recently), which is an extreme honor, but I can’t lie: I am extremely scared of this camera. The camera itself doesn’t intimidate me, but the history of the camera scared the shit out of me.

The Fujifilm S1Pro is the camera I’ve been using. By looking at it, you can tell it’s more of an established photographer’s camera. It’s been awesome to learn on this camera, but I think it’s probably time to make the move to something more my skill level, and have I mentioned I’m SCARED TO DEATH of doing anything to this camera? Ginny’s told me more than once that it’s mine to use, and something to the effect of that ‘I don’t need to worry about it.’ I do worry. It’s not mine and it has ridiculously RIDICULOUS sentimental value.

Why am I trying to rationalize this? Because I want this:

The Nikon D3000. It’s small and pretty and red and it’s everything I want in a camera.

So, the question remains, do I splurge a little bit on this camera with my incoming tax refund, or do I keep using the camera I’m almost, kind of, scared to use. I think it’s a no brainer.

    All I know is that a DSLR is always a good choice but you need to feel comfortable with it and able to use it properly. If you feel unsure, then your pictures won’t look as good.

    Why don’t you just use your friend’s camera and then send ME the money you were going to use for a new one, so I can get one? ;

    I’m definitely comfortable with a DSLR in general, it’s just the specific dslr (the fujifilm) that I’m uncomfortable with because of it’s history.

    I like that I know you so well that without even opening this link, I could tell what the post was going to be about strictly by the title <3

    In the end, it's your decision. You're a Nikon gal (or so it would seem) and you'd like a camera of your own. I'm excited about being able to buy things on my own because it's mine and I can create the history with you. I totally see you point in being scared! I'd be scared too. Ginny trusts you though <3 just remember that. But you have to feel comfortable with using the camera because at really, YOU'LL be the one taking the pics with it :)

    I meant..”create the history with IT.” le sigh.

    You’ve been wanting your own DSLR for probably as long as I’ve wanted one. I’m finally getting one because I worked hard, got the money, earned it and I want it :) haha.

    Just think of this way, if you end up being scared to use the new one you buy, you can always go back to the Fujifilm. Ginn has made it clear that it’ll always be there for your use <3

    I would never advocate this splurge in your current situation. Use the tax return for debt, please. Temporary delay in gratification will make the world a way easier place in the long run.

    Splurge! You need your own camera.

    Save your money right now and use the camera your friend is loaning out to you. :) No need to be scared of it so long as you just take good care of it.

    If she doesn’t already have a bag for it that you can use, look at the Crumpler bags for it. They’re awesome :)
